Visiting Menorca for its Many Charms

When it comes time to plan a holiday, most travelers are worn out from the rigors of work or the boredom of daily routines. They’re ready to hop a plane to somewhere that will let them unwind and, if they’re feeling up to it, explore. There are countless destinations in Europe and throughout the world that fit the bill. In fact, you could spend your life on holiday and probably never run out of places to visit.

But let’s face it: your holidays are not unlimited and because of the expense involved with traveling, your opportunities could be few and far between. So why not be a bit more discerning when planning your next venture? You deserve more than relaxation and beauty. You deserve something memorable. Visiting Menorca, the smallest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, would be a great place for a holiday.

Resting unassumingly off the mainland in the Mediterranean Sea, Menorca is dwarfed by its nearest and most imposing neighbor, Majorca. But the island’s size can hardly contain its abundance of lush landscapes, sweeping coastal views, and stirring historical echoes. First inhabited by the Minoans of ancient Crete, Menorca still boasts evidence of its earliest settlers in an array of megalithic stone ruins.

Through the years, the island found itself invaded by the Vandals, possessed by the British, and finally ceded to Spain in the early 19th century. Remnants of each historical period remain culturally visible today.

When you finish immersing yourself in Menorca’s rich history, you’ll be ready to take advantage of its quiet beaches and colorful villages. Because it is not a mainstream tourist hub, you’ll rarely get caught in a crowd or wait in a line to taste some Mediterranean cuisine at one of the island’s gourmet restaurants. The summer months bring a small influx of visitors, as Menorca hosts a number of extravagant festivals, like June’s ‘Festes de Sant Joan’.

Visiting Menorca will reward any traveler – young or old – with a memorable dose of sights, tastes, and activities. This is a place that deserves more tourist clamor, but its lack thereof is part of its charm.
