Off the coast of Spain, in the western Mediterranean Sea, lies an archipelago called the Balearic Islands. Lost in the middle of this chain is Menorca, one of the best-kept secrets in the travel community. For those who have visited, visions of pristine beaches and crystal blue ocean probably come to mind.

Portions of the island are consumed by resort compounds that take advantage of its tropical climate and scenery, but inland from the beaches are vast stretches of rugged landscape waiting to be explored by intrepid outdoorsmen. Wherever your interests lie, if you study a Menorca travel guide, you’ll discover that it caters to all tastes.

A memorable holiday relies a lot on the weather, and in Menorca you need not worry. The island boasts one of the driest climates in the world; in fact, a rainy summer day is almost unheard of. The humidity hovers around 70% for much of the year, and the average high temperature for June, July, and August is 85°F. You may never want to go indoors.

Keeping near the coast, you can check out what’s underwater by joining a scuba group or snorkeling with your friends or family. Sailing is always an option because of the ever-present Mediterranean breeze, or you could take a charter cruise out to survey the beautiful island reefs. If you have energy leftover, there are bikes for hire at numerous spots around Menorca. Why not pedal around to visit a historical site or two?

There is also Monte Toro, which at 350 meters high, offers panoramic views over all of Menorca. It’s also home to the Sanctuary of the Toro Virgin, a church and monastery built in the 17th century to honor a statue of the Virgin Mary discovered by a tribe of merchants in the 8th century. Down the mountain and back toward the coast you’ll find La Mola, the Fortress of Isabel II, erected by the Spanish to keep the British from trying to retake the island in 1847.

After sampling the highlights of your Menorca travel guide, you’ll be ready to settle down in front of a delicious dish at one of the island’s outstanding restaurants. Though it’s a smaller destination than most, there is more than enough food and fun to make your holiday memorable.
