If you have never been to Menorca, you will find a fresh and exciting adventure awaits
you that cannot be taken in with just one visit. If you are returning, you know what I
mean. That’s because there are scores of excursions in Menorca you can visit this year.
Whether you are young or old, have no limitations or on a modest budget, planning a
romantic getaway or a family holiday, there is so much to see on this little island.
When coming onto the island from either the mainland Spain or one of the sister islands
of Ibiza or Majorca, you will arrive at Menorca’s capital, Mahon. Mahon has much to
offer the vacationer in the way of historic sites, shopping, restaurants, and a festive
nightlife.
The history is rich with cultures dating from the time of The Bronze Age (2000 BC) with
many centuries of development from across Europe. The National Museum will help you
traverse the ages and the sites just outside its walls. Some of the ancient sites you may
want to visit are various burial monuments such as megalithic tombs and collective tombs
known as navetas.
You may want to take in the culture both past and present by attending
one of the many traditional celebrations that take place throughout the year. Local
residents and tourist alike join in on the festivities such as The ‘Festes de Sant Joan’
which is held annually in Ciutadella during the summer.
If you prefer horseback riding, Menorca has a background that have made horses a way of life. Minorca has its own race
of black horses. In all the festivities, the horses and their “caixers” (riders) are the centerpieces. The “Cami de Cavalls” is a pathway surrounding the island for horseback travel.
History is not all you will find in Menorca. The modern age is alive and well here too.
Nightclubs abound and sophisticated dining are plentiful all around the island. There are
bars and taverns in Anden Poniente, live music and discotheques in Ciutadella, and a
spectacular dance club Sa Cova d’en Xoroi in Cala’n Porter that is situated in a natural
cave and offers marvelous views over The Mediterranean Sea.
More exhaustive than can be covered here, there are many more excursions in Menorca
waiting for the adventurous heart to discover and they are waiting for you.
