Menorca, a relatively small island, was occupied by the British in the late 17th century, who were drawn to the splendid natural harbour due to growing British trade in the Mediterranean. After a brief occupation by the French, the British returned and handed the island back to the Spanish in 1802.
If you are planning your Menorca holidays and want to get in some diving while you are there you won’t be disappointed. Menorca boasts the best diving of all three Balearic Islands and also houses more ancient ruins than any other Mediterranean island. These include burial mounds, as well as villages. During the Roman occupation of Menorca, the locals were the most famous stone throwers in the world and served with the Roman armies.
Located upright on the ocean floor, the Malakoff wreck that was once a cargo steamer nowadays acts as an artificial reef. This diving site is an impressive 105 metres in length and is home to massive morays. It also attracts such ocean species as barracuda and John Dory. Sea life here is both spectacular and varied, hence making this one of the best diving spots in Menorca. The Malakoff wreck is suitable for expert divers only.
Another must-see Menorca diving spot for enthusiasts are the caves at Pont d’En Gil, which are magnificent. Pont d’En Gil Cavern, the best in the Balearic islands, is 220 metres long and suitable for almost any level of diver due to the amount of daylight that can be seen. Divers can enjoy a special experience with a jaw-dropping display of stalagmites, stalactites, and waterfalls. The cavern is regarded as a geological masterpiece and should be on any diver’s must-see list.
